Dear Dr. Boaz,

Just wanted to write and express my sincere thanks for your many kindnesses over the past years. I would hope that difficulty in finding an honest dentist is atypical, but I certainly experienced a strange saga before coming under your care.

When I moved to Chapel Hill, I first went to a dentist recommended by my landlady, who emphasized that a $300 full-mouth x-ray had to be taken on my first visit. Once that was out of the way, she proposed several referrals for braces, wisdom teeth removal, and bridges. At no time did she inquire about my ability to pay for such massive renovations, and I found it curious that she zeroed in on my only existing bridge and recommended what turned out to be an unnecessary root canal. Perhaps she assumed I'd be grateful for a million-dollar smile because she was only planning to charge me $20,000 or so.

I then tried another dentist near the Sheraton hotel who had a very tastefully decorated office. After his assistant took an x-ray, he confirmed that I did indeed need a root canal, even though I could tell that the x-ray was not of the tooth in question. It was then that I had the good fortune of asking Alex at El Centro Latino, who referred me to you, and I've been extremely grateful ever since. Not only were you able to determine that I didn't need a root canal, but you've also been very understanding about my limited resources.

There are more things wrong with the U.S. healthcare system than can probably ever be resolved. Being self-employed, my premiums increase over 30% per year, which means that long before Medicare kicks in, I'll be expected to pay more for insurance than what I can reasonably hope to earn in a year. Unlike the others, you're a true professional in the highest ethical sense of the word, that is, someone who accurately assesses clients' needs rather than seeing them as a marketing opportunity. Thank you so much for your expertise and integrity.

With best wishes for your continuing success,

Dave Prout
